Respirator Training and Fit Testing
Respirator training and respirator fit testing are provided for employers to meet the requirements listed by OSHA in 29 CFR 1910.134. Respirator training is required annually and follows the criteria outlined in 29 CFR 1910.134(k).
Respirator Fit Testing is conducted for NIOSH-approved tight-fitting respirators. It verifies their effectiveness by comparing particles inside the respirator to particles outside of the respirator. Quantitative fit testing, the preferred method, is required for full-face respirators and half-face respirators when a worker’s exposure to a hazardous chemical is greater than 1/10 of the Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL). It is also the only objective fit test method.
Employees are required to have a signed medical evaluation with them. They must complete all three components (medical exam, training, fit testing) prior to donning a respirator.
